This Albuquerque Gravel route is the second of three routes we are bringing to you from Aileen El-Kadi Schuster of New Mexico.

Aileen is a runner who fell in love with cycling in 2014. In 2018 she and her husband moved from TX to NM, and discovered gravel riding and CX. After buying a gravel bike, she realized she could go anywhere and be closer to nature, exploring places she could have never been on a road bike. Gravel presented her with friends who share the same respect and love for nature. She participated in many gravel races/events and won the CX NM State championship in 2019. “I love speed, adrenaline and competition, so CX is my favorite cycling discipline. My Racing Apparel/BMC teammates Bryan Reid and Hadji Corona inspire me to keep exploring and racing.”

Aileen and her husband have done gravel rides in Argentina, Spain, England, Ecuador and the Netherlands. “New Mexico is a beautiful state for all seasons riding. Fall is simply amazing here. We would love to help anyone who comes to NM to find the perfect gravel rides, so please feel free to contact me.”

If you are looking for a weekend getaway in NM, we’ve got you set with several recommended rides from an experienced local gravel rider!

Highs:

During this beginner Albuquerque Gravel route, you will ride alongside the Rio Grande river on a shaded single/double dirt path/trail and you can admire the beauty of nature in all seasons- Fall, Summer, or Winter.

It is a well-maintained trail that gives you the opportunity to see wildlife. You will encounter rabbits, ducks, roadrunners, a variety of birds and maybe shy coyotes.

No motorized vehicles are allowed on the trail, so even though the route is close to downtown Albuquerque, it’s very quiet and safe.

Lows:

There’s nothing negative about this lovely trail, however, if you like to go fast, like I do, make sure you keep an eye open for joggers, other riders, walkers with dogs, and horse riders.

Do this ride if you are near Albuquerque, New Mexico and want to have fun on a flat, safe and shady trail while admiring the famous Rio Grande river.

Other Notes:

This dirt trail runs parallel to a paved trail, therefore, you can simply exit anytime and be on the pave trail if needed. There are restrooms at Alameda Open Space parking, Tingley Beach and the Bio Park (all along the route).

This ride begins and ends at the Alameda Open Space which is near the intersection of Alameda Blvd and Rio Grande Blvd. There is free parking and public restrooms here.
